Position Overview

Mid-South Testing is the premier engineering services company in North Alabama. For over 45 years, our full-service engineering team has partnered with clients to improve communities by providing Environmental, Civil, and Geotechnical Engineering services throughout Alabama. Mid-South Testing services a broad range of industries including Industrial and manufacturing facilities, government and municipal, water and wastewater treatment facilities, general contractors, property owners, and the public sector through our Environmental and Remediation Services divisions.

We are seeking a motivated individual to join our team as a Soil Classification Specialist / Field Technician. This dual-role position combines soil identification and classification with hands-on construction materials testing and fieldwork. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys working both in the lab and the field, and is eager to contribute to a variety of geotechnical and environmental projects.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or technical coursework in engineering, geology, construction science, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in soil classification or CMT strongly preferred; training provided for motivated candidates
  • Certifications: ACI and other CMT-related certifications preferred (training and certification support available)
  • Skills: Strong observational and documentation skills; ability to balance lab precision with field efficiency
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret procedures, manuals, technical documents, and reports related to construction materials testing and laboratory protocols.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Must be adaptable to changing project requirements. 
  • Occasionally weekend work. 
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying conditions; valid driver’s license and clean driving record required (Must be cleared to drive company vehicles by MST insurance)
  • Commitment to workplace safety, following OSHA, company, and laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving materials or equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry between 35 and 75 lbs. over distances up to 75 feet, involving regular repetitive motion.
  • Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, pull, kneel, climb, balance, lift, carry, and push as required for laboratory and fieldwork.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER preferred, not required

Key Responsibilities:

Soil Classification & Logging:

  • Classify soils in the field and lab using ASTM and related standards
  • Perform visual-manual soil classification descriptions, Atterberg limits, and particle size analysis
  • Log and document soil samples obtained during drilling, test pits, and direct-push investigations
  • Provide accurate records to support geotechnical analysis and foundation recommendations
  • Detailed documentation preparation with organizational reporting of field reports.  

Construction Materials Testing (CMT) & Field Work

  • Conduct field and laboratory testing on soil, concrete, and asphalt materials per ASTM/AASHTO standards
  • Operate and maintain field testing equipment (nuclear density gauge, slump cone testing, etc.)
  • Prepare clear and accurate daily reports for clients and project managers
  • Work directly with contractors, engineers, and clients to ensure construction quality standards are met
  • Assist with sample preparation, handling, and proper storage, ensuring sample integrity, traceability, and adherence to laboratory protocols.
  • Accurately document and report test results, maintaining detailed, organized, and error-free records.
  • Ensure that project testing requirements are met and compliant with project specifications, requirements, and company policies and procedures.
  • ACI Certification preferred but not required.  Must be able to acquire certification within 6 months.

Other:

  • Willing to assist where needed to expedite project work.
  • Groundwater Sampling activities, when needed

Other Requirements

You must be able to successfully pass Mid-South Testing’s pre-employment background check and drug screening. This position regularly requires intermittent sitting, standing, walking, running, climbing, squatting, and kneeling. Physical strength and dexterity sufficient to perform the required task. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds or more with assistance.
